Double Chooz ist ein Neutrino dissapearance Experiment, das Reaktorneutrinos nutzt, um Neutrino-Oszillationen zu vermessen. Dafür nutzt Double Chooz zwei identische Detektoren mit unterschiedlichem Abstand zu einem kommerziellen Kernreaktor und vergleicht die gemessenen Energiespektren des emittierten Neutrinoflusses. Beide Detektoren haben den gleichen, mehrschichtigen und fragilen Aufbau und benötigen hochpräzise Liquid-& Gas-Handling sowie Monitoring Systeme, um sicher befüllt und betrieben werden zu können.
